- 11/22/06 - Guest appearance: Dumping Project conundrum
Not coming out of retirement, just making a brief one-time reappearance to say a few words on behalf of the Dumping Project (as well as "Happy Thanksgiving" to the Americans on the forum).
See, I was sort of motoring along at my new contracting gig at Mellon Financial (only the second stint of steady income in the last four years...sigh) when Guru sends me a nervous email this morning asking for advice, like Eddie Haskell coming to Wally Cleaver on "Leave It to Beaver" with an "I'm in a jam, old buddy! What do I do?"
I told him I would explain and lay out some choices for you.
The "rare Taito game" the Dumping Project was after was a "Steel Worker" PCB that a Japanese seller put up for sale last week; probably the one game from the classic era that's anticipated more than any other. The Project's Japanese contact informed the rest of the Project personnel immediately, and you guys responded to Guru's appeal for funds in heroic fashion. Your contributions were sent to the Japanese contact, who began withdrawing them from PayPal (which takes a couple of days to process in Japan) and asked the seller if the Project could make a downpayment on the board, with full purchase to follow soon.
The seller (who AFAIK is still advertising the PCB for sale) responded, "Sorry, the board is not available."
This is not surprising to me. Japanese sellers, auctioners, and PCB shops are notorious for the opacity and non-updatedness of their sales arrangements. And I certainly don't blame the contact for waiting to get in touch with the seller until all of the funds came in; it didn't happen very often, but on a couple of widely scattered occasions, the contact got stuck spending their own hard-earned money on boards which Project money didn't come in for.
So here are a couple of options (please post replies with your votes or other suggestions):
1) Another 0 or so will allow the Project to attempt to obtain another Most Wanted board...assuming it's still there when they try to buy it. Certainly not as original as "Steel Worker" -- looks like another "Invaders" clone with maybe a few strange tweaks -- but very very rare.
2) The Project can bank the money and wait for something else (almost) as good as "Steel Worker" to come along. Might be six months to a year or more before that happens, though. The upside is, the funds will be available for a same-day response if it does happen.
3) You guys can be very generous with another round of donations and the Project can pursue both #1 and #2. ;-)
Very sorry on behalf of everyone at the Project that the original plan didn't work out; regardless, you guys stepped up to the plate in a stellar way and should be very proud of yourselves. Bravo, and good luck in the future!
