- System 16A sound tweakin' (January 16, 2005)
Not much time for MAME today, but took a few minutes to simply and clean up the sound handling in the System 16A games. These games used an I8039 variant (N7751) to drive a DAC which plays back the samples. This same approach was originally used by Sega for Monster Bash, and the previous code was an obvious copy/paste job from that work. With a little bit of work, I was able to figure out that a few control lines were not mapped correctly, so now the interaction between the Z80 that runs the sound and the N7751 is correct, as far as I can determine without the help of schematics.
The previous hacky approach worked pretty well, so you probably won't notice any difference, except that the 16A games no longer play a random sample when you first start them up.
