Virtua Racing

Virtua Racing for the Sega Mega Drive is a true milestone in the industry—it’s no joke to have a home system running full-fledged, honest-to-goodness 3D racing. At the time of its release, the project seemed like an absolute miracle of engineering: to force a standard 16-bit console to render three-dimensional graphics, Sega had to build a special, expensive SVP (Sega Virtual Processor) coprocessor into every single cartridge. Despite a complete lack of textures—all polygons here are simply filled with flat colors—the game still looks surprisingly charming and stylish today, thanks to its clean geometric aesthetic and high-speed gameplay.

The game was only successfully emulated near the end of 2008. Because of this, you won't be able to run it on older emulators, most notably Gens and its various modifications.
