**Virtua Fighter** for the Sega 32X is a home port of the game that laid the foundation for the 3D fighting genre. Porting the graphically demanding arcade original to the 32-bit add-on required serious compromises from the developers: the polygon count for character models was reduced, and the 3D stages were replaced with flat backgrounds. Nevertheless, the authors managed to fully preserve the combat system and maintain a stable frame rate, which is crucial for gameplay.
The gameplay of Virtua Fighter focuses on imitating real martial arts without the use of fantasy special moves. Players have access to a base roster of eight characters, each with a unique fighting style, utilizing a three-button control scheme: punch, kick, and guard. The 32X version includes the standard arcade and versus modes, alongside an additional tournament mode. Thanks to high-quality optimization, this port ran smoother than the initial release of the game for the more powerful Sega Saturn console, which came out around the same time.
